Artist Spotlight: Jesse Rodriguez
Wesley Chapel High school has countless talented individuals in its walls, one such talented pupil is Jesse Rodriguez.
Jesse Rodriguez is a senior here at WCHS, whose gifts have blossomed to create wonderful digital artwork from character design, fanart, and pieces of self-expression. One such piece, is called ‘ESCAPISM’ a creation that Jess was more than happy to answer some questions on.
“My creative process was trying to express a feeling was simply “wrong”,” Jesse stated with thought. “While it does have the same definition for everyone, it just depends on who you are. When I was making this, I wanted to convey symbolism that there was an “error” that needed to be fixed. The actual “error” is never directly shown in the piece because the meaning is that something is wrong, but nobody knows what is wrong.”
The meaning of something being wrong is well known to humans, whether it’s gut-wrecking nausea, or a buzzing in the back of your skull, everyone has it. But the ability to transfer that feeling into a piece of artwork successfully is impressive; something that Jesse has achieved very well.
There are many different mediums of art all varying in complexity, such as oil paints, clay, wood, pencils and so much more; but the form of artwork done by our artist of the month is digital artwork (also known as computer art). This means that instead of drawing on paper, Jesse draws on a digital tablet.
Digital drawing tablets can have many different ways to create artwork, however the one Jesse uses is based around software’s installed on the device such as Painttoolsai2 which Jesse uses to create some of their digital pieces. Inside the software, the files contain countless brushes, blending tools, stickers, all of which the artists are able to use to create inspiring pieces like our artist, Jess.
When asked about Jesse’s favorite moment creating the drawing, they had an interesting answer. “I would say my favorite part was creating the backgrounds, with the windows XP errors and the overlay of binary. The background is also a gradient of the SMPTE color bars.” It’s not uncommon for artists to have a common theme in their artwork, and with Jesse she is no different! It is common to see XP errors in the backgrounds of their work (which you can see at @mystaticmind on Instagram) which isn’t seen often making the art refreshing and mind blowing. Jesse has a vivid and exciting coloring style for both characters and backgrounds alike. With colors that pop and a unique style to match it, she can create amazing drawings.
