What to Watch: Summer Edition

The smell of popcorn, the sounds of laughter, and the suspense of action scenes are just some of the wonderful thing you can find in a movie theater. This summer many movies are coming out and all look very promising.

Summer can be very enjoyable, that is when you have something to do. People tend to find themselves being very bored over summer vacation. In these situations going to the movies and watching a new comedy or action movie with your large popcorn is just what you need.  This summer (May-August) there are many exciting movies being released.

June is blockbuster month, full of a variety of movie releases including “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” “Elemental,” “The Flash” and the highly anticipated  Indiana Jones movie.

Sadly, Steven Spielberg will not be directing “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,”  but all of fans favorite characters will be played by the original actors. Fan favorite Harrison Ford will be reprising his role as the iconic Indian Jones.

It’s been over 14 years since the last Indiana Jones has been released, but according to Spielberg he’s not the only one who knows how to create an Indiana Jones movie. “….It’s really, really a good ‘Indiana Jones’ film. I’m really proud of what Jim has done with it.” Spielberg added, “When the lights came up I just turned to the group and said, …. I thought I was the only one who knew how to make one of these.” (JoBlo)

July is also a new release movie packed month. Kicking things of on July 7th is the movie series “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Part One,” which will be shown in theatres starting July 14th 2023.

“Not much has been revealed about Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, but what we do know shows off an epic action story that sounds like a worthy addition to the successful franchise.”

For those film buffs looking for different the new release, “Barbie” may fit the bill. This comedic endeavor is based on the Matel Barbie and Ken fashion dolls. The cast stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. Other cast members include Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, Helen Miren and Micheal Cera.

The plot of “Barbie” centers around Barbie being expelled from Barbieland for being a less-than-perfect doll, Barbie sets off to the real world to find true happiness. According to those who have gotten a sneak peak at the film they say the film’s costumes are thoughtful and nostalgic.

Back to School means it is time for the new fall releases. A highly anticipated new release from the DC Universe is “Blue Beetle.”

DC’s official description of Blue Beetle is “Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle.”

Blue Beetle is your typical young adult finds a relic and becomes a superhero story. But that’s just what fans are looking for, “Beyond the superficial similarities to Spider-Man and Iron Man, Blue Beetle is also incredibly similar to Venom. From the alien connection to the evil organization trying to control said extraterrestrials, the newest DC movie star is a much more heroic version of the Lethal Protector.” (CBR.com).

Beside Cobra Kai’s Solo Maridueña in the title role, Blue Beetle features Bruna Marquezine as Penny; Belissa Escobedo as Milagros, Jaime’s little sister; George Lopez as Jaime’s uncle Rudy, and Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord. Additionally, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, Havvey Guillén, and Adriana Barraza all appear. Raoul Trujillo (Mayans MC) plays the movie’s villain, Caparax the Industructible Man.

Reboots are also in the works in August, with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles “Mutant Mayhem.” The heroes, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and Donatello are back with the help of Seth Rogan.   But this time, the animation is more colorful, and comic book style.

The voice cast includes Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu and Brady Noon as the roles of Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael, respectively. The A-list cast has Jackie Chan as Master Splinter, Ayo Edebiri as April O’Neil, Rogen as Bebop, John Cena as Rocksteady, Hannibal Buress as Genghis Frog, Rose Byrne as Leatherhead, Ice Cube as Superfly, Natasia Demetriou as Wingnut, Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter Stockman, Post Malone as Ray Fillet, Paul Rudd as Mondo Gecko and Maya Rudolph as Cynthia Utrom.

“Not only does Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie function as a superb entry point for new fans, but it also commits to tonal and stylistic makeovers that elevate the franchise in unexpected ways,” states Hayden Mears of IGN Movies.
