Every year, students are expected to use knowledge gathered throughout the year to pass their end of course exams in hopes that they meet graduation requirements. Although, the school provides multiple chances to improve our scores, students are not given their E.O.C. schedules in advanced which more often than not, leads to unprepared students scoring lowly on their yearly exams. As a student enrolled at Wesley Chapel High School, both my peer and I struggle to prepare for exams without set dates.

Students are expected to study in our personal time to take these exams when we return to school, but how will students know what material to look at without guidance? Teachers should provide students with a schedule for every upcoming standardized test. Doing this will effectively increase students’ grades on these exams. Standardized testing causes students to have anxiety by attempting to cram a whole course into their head just for one day of testing.

The state has gradually increased the number of tests students are taking. This decision led to the early start of state testing for students attending Pasco County schools. To adjust to this, the test has been moved up and or rushed to make room for retakes. Although this has its disadvantages, after discussing this topic with a reliable anonymous source some changes around campus will be made to improve students’ test scores. “The school will begin sending emails informing families about testing dates.” Tutoring after school for end of course exam retakes is undergoing development and will be offered to students dedicated to graduating.

The state is very reluctant in giving out reviews for the state tests; The only way we can give out tutoring is if the teachers are willing to give up their personal time. If not, then we cannot offer tutoring for state tests.” Some teachers are beginning to offer after-school tutoring but not all. One way the school is acting on this matter is by sorting students into intensive reading classes and math remediation courses to help. This includes seniors being given SAT prep as well.

In summary, our administration is making changes to help resolve all issues regarding state testing. Over time, we will see the changes take effect. Communication has been improving greatly. They recently been putting up testing schedules in my learning. This will allow all students to inform themselves and prepare for exams, leading to a decrease in testing anxiety and an increase in test score improvements. Frequent reminders through via messages, emails, and cell phone calls will begin. You can also locate the school event calendar at https://wchs.pasco.k12.fl.us. Students begin preparing for exams and study as soon as possible. These are graduation requirements.
